Welcome To The Olive Lake Eco Lodge
Also known as the Luxury Oasis!
For most, a trip into the heart of the Canadian Wilderness comes with roughing it a bit. Primitive campsites, a small tent pad, and a million dollar view are usually standard. Comfort is sacrificed for an incredible backcountry experience. But what if you could have the best of both worlds? What if a place existed that would give you all the wilderness, paddling, fishing and adventure by day, but also pamper you with luxury in the evening. Well, such a place does exist it’s located along the eastern border of Woodland Caribou Provincial Park. It’s the Olive Lake Eco Lodge!
Arriving in Red Lake, a quick 20-minute float plane flight from town has you arriving at the dock of your own private wilderness lodge. Stepping off the float, the immensity of this landscape hits you. With nobody around for 50 miles or more, you have this lake all to yourself, not to mention the 3 adjacent lakes you can hike and portage into.
Walking up to the front deck, you immediately notice this finely appointed cabin is not just another shack in the woods. Sprawling across the 26’ x 12’ covered deck are loungers and sofas offering a fantastic view of the lake to the west. A nice touch but once inside you’re greeted with leather sofa’s, fine log furniture and a complete kitchen for your inner chef. Hot and cold running water are standard and the “on demand” hot water system ensures you’ll never run out.
Television, Wifi, and telephone via satellite are a nice touch allowing you to stay in contact and share memories instantly after a day of exploring and catching your fill of Walleye, Lake Trout, and Northern Pike.
Sleeping up to 8 guests comfortably, this cabin is fully insulated ensuring the heat of the summer sun never penetrates the inside allowing you to relax in comfort and save the sweating for the daytime. A large shower offers guests the opportunity to clean up without the need to for a dip in the lake, although what’s a true wilderness trip without a nice cold dunk! All of the cabin’s amenities make for an impressive base, however, it’s the solar system that truly sets this place apart from all others in the region. A large, 8-panel solar setup located on the property brings life to the cabin and allows for all the conveniences of home. Modern LED lights (dimming) and electric appliances give you the feeling that you’re right at home and not in some far off wilderness setting.

On the adventure side, Canoes, Kayaks and Stand Up Paddleboards are a free issue and the main lake offers over 40 miles of shoreline to explore. For those looking for even more adventure, day trips to Linge Lake, Bigshell Lake or Trough Lake are all within reach.
Olive Lake itself though offers some of the best Walleye fishing I’ve ever experienced. In 2017, guests caught and released 31 Walleye over 28”, including 2 at 31”. A trophy fishery to be sure, but also a productive one with loads of eater sized fish ready to be cooked up at the cabins large outdoor fish fry gazebo (featuring a professional 8 burner cooktop).
All the amenities aside though, as a landscape photographer, I found the photo opportunities around Olive Lake to be incredible and having a fully functioning cabin to work out of as a base really allowed me to concentrate on my photographs and less on worrying about conserving battery power or not being able to backup my images on laptops and drives. Indeed, with the northwest exposure of the cabin, and a long dock from which to steady my tripod, I’ve never had such a comfortable place to work from when capturing stars and Northern Lights. For 5 nights I spent hours on the dock, basking under a symphony of greens and yellows as the Aurora Borealis put on incredible displays.
Roughing it in the wilderness is not for everyone. Neither are 5-star hotels in the city. For those looking for a bucket list style of adventure that allows for deep wilderness access, solitude, and incredible fishing but also offers all the amenities and comfort of home, the Olive Lake Eco-Lodge should definitely be on your radar.
